New courses (Day 1)
Posted in Life, School on 09/06/2007 08:29 pm by LilyI had Physics 208: Introduction to Material Sciences at 11:30 today, and it is the latest first-class of the week. I walk into the room, and I knew nobody there. I was disappointed because this was the course I picked out as an elective.
I sat near the back and settled in. It wasn’t until the class started that I paid more attention to the prof. She was a mid- to late- 30s woman by the last name of Goncharova. She is a pretty lady with very nervous speaking English, and fairly good grammar, but hard to hear and has a Russian accent. At least, I think it is Russian.
After she introduced the course and herself, she had us introduce ourselves and our majors. The first half pf the students were all fourth years and most were in some Biomaterials Program. This really unnerved me. I am only a 2nd year student and not even sure I belong in my program..! This totally made me doubt my major, killing the confidence earned during the last couple of weeks.. T_T;;.
That class was short, and I had a lot of time to kill before going to the next one which was supposed to be right after if Materials Science didn’t end so early. So I went to Deli and bought some lunch, and met Anne and chased her down the front path of Delaware. That was fun. It’s good to see old faces <3. It makes me feel less lonely than I am walking alone on campus.
Linear Algebra was in the Kresge Building, one that I’ve never been into. I was told that it’s right beside Nat Sci. So I went, and found it quite quickly. After I sat down, I turned around to the back of the classroom and tried to see who I knew in this class. Turns out, Nin (I’m not sure if that’s how it’s written) is in it she waved at me and I waved back. Later on, I saw my old physics lab partner from last year in the same class. Though I guess he didn’t want to talk to me; I was pretty quiet and unapproachable last year.
Professor Valluri is a brown-skinned well-dressed man of his age. At first, I was expecting bad English and grammatically incorrect English because of his skin color, instead his spoken English was the best of all brown-skinned adults I have ever heard, though admittedly I don’t hear very much. That was such a surprise; it can even be considered that he speaks better English than me, because we probably all know that I have bad grammar. The only thing is, he has a slightly Indian accent that’s hard to comprehend at times, but most of the time it is pretty coherent and sophisticated… On his website, he wrote,
“Curiosity is an essential part of my being. The sense of awe, wonder and delight on the nature of things around me gives me plenty of energy to pursue the different trails that attract my attention. Being a physicist has given me an opportunity to pursue some practical interests - the mathematician in me gives free vent to the imagination - the philosopher in my being tries to rationalize and try to accept things as they are, instead of what they should be. I have tried to pursue, as much as possible, knowledge for its own sake.”
He writes better than me; nice English eh?
I was totally unsure of my major, which is Medical Physics, something that was “interesting” but was told that it is “very hard” by some people during the summer. Physics 279y was a seminar non-credit course mandatory for Medical Physics where “second year students talk to upper-year students and faculty members about research areas, practise giving and critiquing talks, and provide information on careers.” I’m an introvert, so I was very unwilling to go to this class, which starts at 3:30pm and ends at 4:30pm. I arrived at the classroom and there was a few people standing there, chatting about things I couldn’t eavesdrop. The classroom door was closed so I walked around and arrived at the classroom again, this time noticing the paper stapled to the bulletin board right next to the classroom door.
Physics 279y/379y/479y
Seminars for Medical Physics students will begin on September 13th.
No classes this week.
I was so relieved! But I know that when time comes, I would still have to go… T_T;;.
I will update more after courses are done for tomorrow.
I will walk to Perth to see Julia and Janice.
I hope you are okay.
When I go home, I will start on Algebra homework.
In other news, I have finished Oishii Puropozu and have started Puropozu Daisakusen. Will post about those later.

After reading all of that, there’s only one thing I want to say to you:
Fight On!

have fun in LinAlg…. seriously, just just buy the solution manual and do all the questions before hand, or you won’t know what Valluri’s talking about once you get out of the grade 12 Geometry review section
