It’s tough being a mathematical formula. I’m always being written down. People have studied me since grade eight, and some don’t stop until they die. I feel so naked and exposed all the time. Those annoying children, who pretend to be so smart and knowledgeable, keep using me in inappropriate manners. The other day, I even got mixed up with the volume of a cube. The very idea! People moan and groan at the sight of me because I have a Greek letter. They always complain about not being able to distinguish from all the variables. I’d like to see them write out the infinite digits of π! I feel so unloved. Often, I get mixed up with πd, it’s the most insulting thing after being called “the volume of a circle.” I just want to give up and explode with anger when I hear that!
On the bright side, I was invented by a guy whose birth and death places are unheard of. That’s always something to brag about when the math formulae get together every hundred years or so. I also had the chance to meet other great people, such as Descartes — wonderful chap, really knew his coordinates, Pascal — funny person with an actual logical explanation for believing in God, Hua Luo Geng — nice guy, but always said my name like a question; although that just might be his accent, and the best fellow of all times — The Great Bruce White.
I’ve come to meet The Great White since when he was at the wee age of four. Over the years, I’ve witnessed him develop from just a young, inexperienced kid trying to play with a calculator, to an experienced mathematician, always ready to pass on his knowledge of math to everyone around him. I enjoy the time he spends with me, writing me out in that neat way he does, tracing out my lines and curves stroke by stroke. Really, I’m never experienced such excitement since Euclid!
Of course, not everyone I meet greet me with smiles and cheers. One girl in particular, I remember very well, used to break into tears when she saw me coming. Her name was, hmm, I think it was Christine Zieba. When she saw me coming, she used to run and hide behind the nearest book she saw. Fortunately, the power of math prevailed and she would be dragged back into her seat where she would stare at me with her lifeless eyes. Sometimes her insensitivity to my wonderful qualities made me want to cry. However, being around for more than 1000 years has toughened my emotions and I am able to look past the despairing present, into the promising future where many good people will put me to good use and discover my full potential.
